Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney has voiced criticism towards Marcus Rashford and Bruno Fernandes, despite their goal-scoring contributions in the Red Devils’ 2-0 victory over Everton at Old Trafford on Saturday.
Fernandes opened the scoring with a penalty in the 12th minute, followed by Rashford’s spot-kick to secure a 2-0 lead later in the half. Both penalties were won cleverly by Alejandro Garnacho.
With the second penalty, Fernandes passed the ball to Rashford, resulting in the same outcome. However, Rooney criticised the gesture.
Speaking on TNT Sports, the former striker explained his views: “I think any club should have one penalty taker. I understand when a player is going through a tough period, but when it’s 1-0 it is risky.
“The keepers study so much now, Jordan [Pickford] would have known his favourite way, but it is a game of cat and mouse.”
While Rooney has a point about Pickford knowing Rashford’s favourite side and trajectory, England’s number one couldn’t do anything to stop the Man United ace from burying his spot-kick.

After the game, Red Devils’manager Erik ten Hag expressed no issue with Rashford taking the penalty and commended Fernandes for the gesture. He said: “In the team, it shows the team spirit. We have more very good penalty takers.”
Although United were able to get the three points they were certainly tested by Sean Dyche’s Everton and on another day perhaps the Toffees could have come away with someone from Old Trafford.
