Opinion: Erik ten Hag’s bravery in withdrawing Man United’s contract offer for David de Gea should be applauded

Once again Man United manager, Erik ten Hag, has been decisive when it comes to making a difficult decision for the club, this time relating to goalkeeper, David de Gea.

The Dutchman is the best thing to happen to the Red Devils in a long, long while.

Not only does he command the dressing room in much the same way as Sir Alex Ferguson did, but he also has his side playing a style of football that sits perfectly in the modern game.

As Cristiano Ronaldo found out not long into ten Hag’s tenure, the manager isn’t a man to be messed with.

Though de Gea’s situation is completely different, it has required another difficult decision to be made and, to his credit, ten Hag hasn’t been cowed by it.

It’s abundantly clear to anyone with even a passing interest in football that de Gea is long past his best. The fact he won last season’s Premier League Golden Glove award for most clean sheets is just massaging the facts to suit.

A more reliable guide as to just how good he now is should be how he performed against Sevilla in the Europa League and Man City in the FA Cup final.

Sir Alex would never have stood for the standard of performances that was seen in those games and others of late by the Spaniard.

Whether ten Hag’s intervention could be seen as a little harsh is really a moot point. To be the best you need the best, and de Gea definitely isn’t that anymore.

  1. most of us were surprised to see the club tabling a new contract offer for him in the first place.they did the same with underperformers like Pobga as well.hopefully this is a sign that sanity is now prevailing at the club & that mediocrity no longer has a place there.

  2. Surely the whole reduced contract offer was to ensure United could get a fee for DDG, rather than extend him for a year on £375k/wk, making it impossible to move him on.

But that’s still £200k/wk on the wage bill for your 2nd choice GK, so ETH was spot on, cutting losses – albeit hampered by the Glazers dragging the a**e out of the club’s sale, leading to a pretty good 2nd Option Onana instead of generational talent Costa, saving €15m (?)

If United are serious about Caicedo & Hojlund, the 3 priority areas will be improved significantly and on an upward trajectory.

  3. David De-gea is due to be moved on, let’s go for onana this time. De-gea is full of fluss and he can’t guarantee us trophies. He conceed’s very cheep FA cup gaols which was not suppose to be, he should be moved on!!

  4. De Gea has done well for man utd but I agree it’s time for him to move on. Those howlers in the FA Cup was enough for the team to change its mind about giving him another deal and for once the team was decisive

  5. Do I agree with you? 120% yes. Good talk, great analysis. If you want to beat the best, you have to sign the best and consistently outperform the rest.
A solid goal keeper is one of the greatest confidence boost any football team can have, and DDG though good, cannot offer that.
    He should go.

  6. said it months before Saville and City games Tony Voges and Wayne Morris that David de Howller was going to cost us. Past his sell by date. Nobody wants him.

  7. And weghorst coming on as substitute For Rashford or Martial , was nt that nepotism.
Ten is Glazers boy . He’s unlike RR.

  8. Surely for me I seen two seasons back that two Man U players need to go that is Pogba and De Gea however good seemed, they were costing the team. It was ok that Pogba moved later but also De Gea last season.
I also wonder why those in authority have not been giving the managers full authority on who to bring!

  9. Let us help the manager clean the house.Like as our club Anthem says, United is known only for Glory.De Gea,Fred,Martial,Maguire,Mac Tominy and not forgetting the Glazer family should all go if we are to see happiness returning.
Let ETH get full authority to sign who will work well for the club.
    United for ever.
