‘Great move’ – Sherwood approves Rice swap deal with £42m England midfielder

There appears to be little doubt now that West Ham captain, Declan Rice, has played his last game for the club, and what a way to bow out.

The midfielder led his Hammers side with aplomb as they won a tense Europa Conference League final against Italian rivals, Fiorentina.

Becoming only the third West Ham captain in history to lift a major trophy after Bobby Moore and Billy Bonds is surely the best way to bow out – as long as the east Londoners get what they want for him.

Given his skill set, Rice is bound to have a queue of takers for his services and that could see a Dutch auction break out with the player sold to the highest bidder.

Speaking on the No Tippy Tappy Football Podcast, former Leeds manager, Sam Allardyce, suggested that Rice could go to Man City rather than rumoured favourites, Arsenal.

“If he (Rice) goes there (Man City), who will be happy going there (West Ham),” Tim Sherwood asked in response.

“Kalvin Phillips? Pep (Guardiola) will give him a chance to succeed.”

As they continued discussing a Phillips switch to the London Stadium in more depth, the ex-Tottenham Hotspur manager did go on to say “Love it. Great move.”

The midfielder signed for City in a £42m move from Leeds United (Sky Sports), but hasn’t consistently hit the heights under Pep Guardiola.

Though there’s no suggestion that the club want him to leave, using him as a makeweight to tempt his England colleague to the north west could be an excellent negotiating tactic from City.

  1. Everyone has an opinion on which team should the player go to. Has the the talked-about player decided? Is it for him to choose or each Tom and Dick decide for him?

  2. Arsenal should do the swap. It would free up more resources for another player to join. It would allow the Hove player to come in defennse

  3. Arsenal have been pencilng him since why then, don’t you suggest for him [Rice] to hit the ground at the London Colney simple.

    1. City have been trying to sign Declan for long even before bringing on Grealish.
Declan was the first guy Pep went for a year be the departure of Fenadinho.

  4. I strongly oppose the idea of Arsenal to go for Manchester City Kevin Phillips this transfer window.
It seems Pep wants to off load some dead woods from his midfield departure once again. The Gunners should not allow this to happen as a suggest from Tim Sherwood. Its total risk because Phillips is an injury prone player and could be an addition to Partey.

    1. They are Spurs supporters so wouldn’t want Arsenal to be stronger! Arsenal doesn’t need Phillips, he is injury prone! They should try and get Rice and Caicido in midfield, a right back a winger to push Saka, and another striker. Holding should be sold among other fringe players.

  5. I don’t think this idea is good for Rice, he will more likely end up like kalvin, ie getting few chance to play. I don’t see him ahead of Rodri at the base of the city midfield because that will be the direct competition.
