The event, which is traditionally seen as a practice run for the following summer’s World Cup, was scheduled to be held in it’s traditional summer slot.

Once FIFA realised that playing in summer in Qatar was highly unsafe they looked to move it to the winter, but faced backlash from a host of countries who are already upset about the World Cup itself interrupting domestic football in 2022.

Rather than have two seasons of disruption, FIFA have decided to relocate it elsewhere.

India and Australia are the early frontrunners to become the new hosts. FIFA said they expect to make a decision by the summer.

Each of the last three Confederations Cups were won by Brazil, with the next instalment due to take place in Russia in 2017.
