Real Madrid have expressed their “surprise” at UEFA President Michel Platini for suggesting that that Cristiano Ronaldo should not win the Ballon d’Or.

The 59 year old UEFA boss is quoted by the BBC as saying the annual prize for the world’s best player should be given to a world champion, meaning a member of the German 2014 Brazil World Cup winning squad.

Madrid said in a club statement: “We are surprised at the repeated declarations regarding his personal preferences over the choice of the winner of the Ballon d’Or, particularly given that he is the head of European football’s principal body, where our understanding is that the strictest impartiality should prevail.”

“We believe that Cristiano Ronaldo has without doubt had his best ever professional year individually,” said the statement.

Ronaldo is favourite for the prestigious award but six World Cup winning Germans are on the shortlist including: Thomas Muller, Toni Kroos, Manuel Neuer, Bastian Schweinsteiger and Philipp Lahm.

The Portuguese forward has enjoyed a remarkable 2014 so far for both club and country, scoring a ridiculous 51 goals in 50 games, 48 of those coming at Real.

The Madrid No.7 helped the Spanish club win the Copa del Rey, UEFA Super Cup and an unprecedented 10th European Cup.

Welsh winger Gareth Bale joins his team-mate on the shortlist for the award but Ronaldo remains on course to win his third Ballon d’Or and second in two years.
